KS3 & GCSE · One-to-one, online

KS3 and GCSE tuition that starts with how your child thinks

One-to-one online tuition through Key Stage 3 and GCSE, with maths and English Language as our main focus.

Many students arrive anxious. They freeze on a hard question, or give up on it. Learning to stay with a problem without panicking is part of what we teach, alongside the subject itself.

Subjects
Maths and English Language are our main focus. We also teach biology, chemistry and physics (combined and triple science), geography and English Literature.
Exam boards
We are most experienced with AQA and Edexcel, and we teach to whichever board your child’s school uses.
Sessions
One-to-one, online, on Google Meet.
Book a free assessment

The assessment is free. You get a written report showing exactly where your child stands, and you’re welcome to use it to work on things at home, whether or not you book tuition.

The assessment

We assess how your child thinks

At Key Stage 3 and GCSE the free assessment is not a checklist against the exam board specification. It looks at four things.

01

Reasoning

How they reason through a problem, and whether they understand why a method works or only how to use it.

02

Foundations

How secure the basics are that everything else rests on: mental maths and algebra, for example.

03

Approach

How they approach a question, and whether they read what it is actually asking.

04

Confidence

How they feel about the subject, and what happens when they do not know the answer straight away.

We build the pathway from what we see, and we reassess as we go, so the plan changes as your child does.

Confidence

Staying with a hard problem is part of what we teach

Many students arrive anxious about a subject. Faced with a hard question, they freeze, or they give up on it.

We do not treat that as separate from the maths or the English. Building the ability to stay with a problem without panicking is part of what we teach, in the same sessions as the subject itself. You can see it in each of the stories below.

In practice

What this looks like

Three of our students, described without names.

Year 10 · Maths

From knowing how to understanding why

Where he started
Foundation level. The assessment showed he knew some methods, the how, without understanding why they worked, and weak mental maths meant he could not sense whether an approach would work.
First
We rebuilt the reasoning behind what he already knew, and strengthened his mental maths.
Reassessment
Reassessment then showed a weak grasp of algebra, which underpins everything at higher tier. We focused there, and that opened up manipulation and the patterns linking different topics.
Then
Exam technique: reading what a harder question is actually asking.
Confidence
Underneath it all was confidence. He used to go into fight-or-flight when he did not know an answer. Now he is comfortable working through not knowing.

The result

From a grade 2 in his Year 10 mocks to a grade 6 in his Year 11 mocks.

Mock grades, not final GCSE results, and one student’s progress is not a prediction for anyone else’s.

Year 11 · Maths

Keeping going at a hard question

Where he started
Foundations similar to the student above.
Confidence
The focus was exam technique and confidence: training him to keep working at a hard question instead of giving up.

Year 7 · Maths

Algebra in the first hour

The first session
Strong natural ability, but shaky mental maths: times tables, and calculations like 404 − 9. She had never been taught to break problems down and spot patterns.
Algebra
She felt behind her classmates on algebra, so we introduced it in that first session. Within minutes, linking it to real-world situations and reading the question differently made the letters stop looking scary.
Confidence
Her confidence improved within that first hour, and she told us she really enjoyed the session.

Sessions and updates

How you stay in the picture

Sessions
One-to-one, online, on Google Meet.
Progress
Written progress reports, plus a WhatsApp group with you and your child. Most parents see the progress for themselves, without needing the reports.
Messages
All messages go through that WhatsApp group, which includes you and your child. We do not message students outside it.

Younger, or preparing for the 11+?

We also teach maths and English at Key Stage 2, whether or not the 11+ is the goal. If your child is preparing for a grammar school entrance test, start with our 11+ pages, which cover the Trafford Consortium, the FSCE exam and each individual school.

Reviews

What students and parents say

Mohammad was excellent support for my daughter with both her maths and English GCSE, of which she passed both, all thanks to him! Highly recommend.

Katie TParent · GCSE maths and English

Mohammad is a wonderful tutor, his way of teaching and explaining problems in a way an individual would understand. He has pushed my maths grade from a 3 up to a 6 in the span of 9 months, he also increased my grades in english from a 4 to a 6 in the same span. Very grateful for him.

Harry AStudent · Year 11

The best tutor my son has had, is able to explain in clear terms what he wants my son to learn. Has a great manner and puts my 14 year old at ease. Has helped improve his maths with real skill.
