Trafford Consortium

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls 11+ Preparation

A selective girls' grammar school in Altrincham, similar in size and profile to its boys' counterpart, and one of the most sought-after girls' schools in Greater Manchester. It defines its catchment by distance from the school rather than by postcode, which changes who is realistically in contention.

The school in brief

Type
Girls, selective
Year 7 places
The number of Year 7 places is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check AGSG’s admissions page for the current figure.
Entrance test
The shared Trafford Consortium test. One registration, one score, used by all five schools.

A large girls' school with a strong academic record and a substantial sixth form. Its intake is drawn from a wide area of south Manchester and north Cheshire, and competition for places is intense enough that the effective catchment is smaller than the published one in most years.

Qualifying score

The qualifying score for 2028 entry is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check AGSG’s admissions page for the current figure.

Treat it as a threshold, not a target. Reaching it makes your child eligible; it does not secure a place. AGSG is oversubscribed, so qualified children are then ranked by the criteria below, in which where you live does most of the work.

Catchment and how places are allocated

The catchment definition is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check AGSG’s admissions page for the current figure.

The order of oversubscription criteria is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check AGSG’s admissions page for the current figure.

How AGSG compares

The closest comparison is Altrincham Grammar School for Boys: similar scale, similar profile, both single-sex, both drawing on the same WA postcodes. The meaningful difference for an application is the shape of the catchment. AGSG measures a radius from the school, so distance is continuous and a family either is or is not near enough. AGSB names specific postcodes within Trafford, so an address can be close in miles yet outside the priority area, or the reverse. Compared with Sale, Stretford and Urmston, AGSG draws from a wider area but fills it more tightly.

Preparing for AGSG

The test is shared, so preparation is not school-specific: the same work counts for all five. What is specific here is the threshold you are aiming past and whether your address puts you in contention at all. We measure before we teach. A free diagnostic assessment maps your child against the Key Stage 2 curriculum objective by objective, so sessions target gaps we have evidence for.

For the exam itself, read the Trafford Consortium page for how the shared test and registration work, and the FSCE exam page for the paper format and what changes.

Is AGSG realistic for your child?

A free diagnostic assessment shows you exactly which Key Stage 2 objectives are secure and which are not, so you can decide with evidence rather than hope.

The assessment is free. You get a written report showing exactly where your child stands, and you’re welcome to use it to work on things at home, whether or not you book tuition. See a sample report.

AGSG 11+: common questions

How many Year 7 places does AGSG offer?
The school's admissions policy sets the published admission number for each entry year. It has recently been reported at just over 200, but we do not publish a figure here until we have confirmed it in the policy itself. The school's admissions page carries the current number.
What is the AGSG catchment area?
AGSG uses a radius measured in a straight line from the school rather than a list of postcodes. That means the question is simply how far your home is from the school, not which postcode district you are in. Confirm the current radius in the school's admissions policy, because it is the single figure that decides most applications.
Is the effective catchment smaller than the published one?
In an oversubscribed year it can be. The published radius sets who may be considered in that criterion, but if more qualified girls apply from inside it than there are places, offers are made to those living closest and the last offer falls short of the full radius. Families near the edge of the published area should treat it as uncertain rather than safe.
What score does my daughter need for AGSG?
AGSG applies its own qualifying score to the shared Consortium test. We do not publish a figure we have not confirmed against the school's own policy for the relevant entry year. Check the admissions policy, and be cautious of tutors quoting a number without saying which year it applies to.
Does AGSG run a separate entrance exam?
No. AGSG uses the shared Trafford Consortium test. Your daughter registers once and sits one exam, and the resulting standardised score is used by all five Consortium schools, each applying its own threshold and its own oversubscription criteria.
Is AGSG moving to the FSCE exam?
Yes. AGSG announced the change along with the rest of the Consortium. Girls entering Year 7 in September 2028 sit the FSCE test in September 2027, covering Key Stage 2 English and maths rather than verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
How does AGSG compare with Loreto Grammar School?
Loreto is the other well-known girls' grammar school in the area, but it is not part of the Consortium and runs its own separate entrance exam. Applying to both means preparing for and sitting two different tests, which is worth factoring into your planning early.
Can my daughter apply to AGSG and Sale Grammar together?
Yes, and many families do. Both are Consortium schools, so one test and one score covers both. You then rank them in your order of preference on the local authority Common Application Form.
