Urmston Grammar School 11+ Preparation

A co-educational grammar school in the west of Trafford, serving Urmston, Flixton, Davyhulme and Partington. It is the Consortium school most worth understanding in detail if you live outside its immediate area, because it is the one that reserves places for high scorers regardless of where they live.

The school in brief

Type
Co-educational, selective
Year 7 places
The number of Year 7 places is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check Urmston Grammar’s admissions page for the current figure.
Entrance test
The shared Trafford Consortium test. One registration, one score, used by all five schools.

A mid-sized co-educational grammar school with a distinctly local intake, drawing heavily from the M41 and M31 postcodes it prioritises. That local focus makes it the natural choice for families in the west of the borough and a harder proposition for families further east.

Qualifying score

The qualifying score for 2028 entry is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check Urmston Grammar’s admissions page for the current figure.

Treat it as a threshold, not a target. Reaching it makes your child eligible; it does not secure a place. Urmston Grammar is oversubscribed, so qualified children are then ranked by the criteria below, in which where you live does most of the work.

Catchment and how places are allocated

The catchment definition is not yet confirmed for publication here. Check Urmston Grammar’s admissions page for the current figure.

How Urmston Grammar compares

Urmston's admissions arrangements differ from the rest of the Consortium in a way that matters. Where the other four allocate almost entirely on catchment and then distance, Urmston is reported to set aside a number of places for the highest-scoring candidates irrespective of home address, alongside places for the highest-scoring pupil premium candidates. If that holds for your entry year, it is the one realistic route into a Trafford grammar school on performance alone rather than geography, and it makes Urmston worth considering for strong candidates who are out of range everywhere else. Confirm the numbers in the current policy before you rely on it.

Preparing for Urmston Grammar

The test is shared, so preparation is not school-specific: the same work counts for all five. What is specific here is the threshold you are aiming past and whether your address puts you in contention at all. We measure before we teach. A free diagnostic assessment maps your child against the Key Stage 2 curriculum objective by objective, so sessions target gaps we have evidence for.

For the exam itself, read the Trafford Consortium page for how the shared test and registration work, and the FSCE exam page for the paper format and what changes.

Is Urmston Grammar realistic for your child?

A free diagnostic assessment shows you exactly which Key Stage 2 objectives are secure and which are not, so you can decide with evidence rather than hope.

The assessment is free. You get a written report showing exactly where your child stands, and you’re welcome to use it to work on things at home, whether or not you book tuition. See a sample report.

Urmston Grammar 11+: common questions

Can my child get into Urmston Grammar from outside M41 and M31?
Possibly, and this is what distinguishes Urmston from the other Consortium schools. Alongside its priority postcodes, Urmston is reported to reserve a number of places for the highest-scoring candidates regardless of home address. If that arrangement applies in your entry year, a strong result can secure a place from outside the priority area, which is not realistically the case at the other four. Confirm the number of reserved places in the current admissions policy.
What is the Urmston Grammar catchment area?
Urmston is reported to give priority to addresses in the M41 and M31 postcodes, covering Urmston, Flixton, Davyhulme and Partington, with remaining places allocated by straight-line distance. Check the exact wording in the admissions policy for your entry year.
What score does my child need for Urmston Grammar?
Urmston is reported to use a qualifying score of 334, with a lower threshold of 324 for pupil premium candidates. We do not publish these as confirmed figures because we have not verified them against the school's own policy document. Check the policy, and note which entry year the figures apply to.
Does Urmston Grammar have a separate score for pupil premium candidates?
It is reported to, and it is also reported to reserve places for the highest-scoring pupil premium applicants. This is unusual among the Consortium schools and worth reading carefully in the policy if it applies to your family.
How many places does Urmston Grammar offer?
Reported as 150 in Year 7, which would make it one of the smaller Consortium intakes. Confirm the published admission number in the admissions policy for your entry year.
Is Urmston Grammar co-educational?
Yes. Urmston, Sale and Stretford are the three co-educational schools in the Consortium.
Is Urmston Grammar changing to the FSCE exam?
Yes, with the rest of the Consortium. Children entering Year 7 in September 2028 sit the FSCE test in September 2027, drawn from the Key Stage 2 English and maths curriculum instead of verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
Should a strong candidate outside Trafford consider Urmston?
It is the Consortium school where that question has a realistic answer, because of the places reserved for top scorers regardless of address. It is still a small number of places and a high bar. Treat it as a genuine possibility worth preparing properly for rather than as a likely outcome, and confirm the arrangement is in place for your entry year.
